Sutton Grammar Audio Visual Upgrade

In the heart of South London, Sutton Grammar School stands as a beacon of excellence in education. Catering to boys aged 11–18 and offering a coeducational sixth form, this selective state grammar school is not just about academic achievements but also about providing a holistic environment where students can explore and excel in the arts. Recognizing the importance of a performance space, Sutton Grammar School embarked on an ambitious installation project to a  upgrade their drama studio and main hall, turning to STLS for a audio-visual makeover.

Transforming Two Spaces

The main hall, a focal point for school assemblies, performances, and events, required a sound system that could deliver clarity and quality to every corner of the room. STLS went with installing high-quality Martin Audio loudspeakers at strategic points both at the front and back of the hall. This setup ensures that sound distribution is even, allowing every word and note to be heard clearly, regardless of where one is seated. The innovative use of wireless control via a tablet or the Allan & Heath SQ5 mixer adds a layer of convenience and flexibility, making sound management flexible for multiple applications.

Stage Lighting

Lighting plays a pivotal role in creating the right atmosphere for any performance or event. STLS’s installation of four new front-of-house lighting bars, discreetly integrated to complement the hall’s décor, marks a significant upgrade. Equipped with LED colour-changing lanterns, the benefits of LED technology—lower power consumption, higher reliability, and remote color change capability—make it a smart choice for modern stage lighting. Control is simplified through a tablet or a wall-mounted panel, allowing for easy selection from numerous pre-programmed lighting scenes.

Projection

Visuals are as important as sound and lighting in a learning environment and performance space. STLS provided a high-level Epson projector paired with a  remote-controlled electric projection screen, creating a larger screen space in the main hall. This setup is not limited to traditional projections; it also serves as a  video backdrop for productions, with remote electronic lens-shift and zoom features for versatile use.

Drama Studio Upgrades

The drama studio’s upgrades complements the main hall’s works. STLS installed a new lighting desk and another Epson projector and screen, modernising the studio’s capabilities for drama and performance. The addition of a Martin Audio sound system ensures that the studio’s audio quality matches that of the main hall, providing students with a professional-grade environment to perform in.
